Economy Watch: US land Billionaires Mostly Include Familiar Faces

American land billionaire Donald Bren came in at No. 66 on Forbes’ annual list of the world’s billionaires, which was released on Monday. Those on the list are ranked by net worth and categorized by industry and country of origin.

In recent years leading up to my last update in 2022, the list of billionaires in the U.S., particularly those who have significant holdings in land, has largely featured familiar names. Many of these individuals have accumulated vast wealth over decades, primarily through real estate investments, development projects, and ownership of large agricultural or ranching operations.

Some of the well-known figures who have been prominently featured on lists of U.S. land billionaires include:

1. Ted Turner - Founder of CNN and a media mogul, Turner is also one of the largest private landowners in the United States. He owns vast tracts of land across several states, including Montana, New Mexico, and Nebraska.

2. John Malone - A telecommunications magnate, Malone has invested heavily in land and owns extensive properties, particularly in Colorado and Maine. His land holdings include timberland, ranches, and recreational properties.

3. Stan Kroenke - Owner of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which owns several professional sports teams, Kroenke is also a major landowner. He owns large ranches in Montana, Wyoming, and other western states.

4. The Irving Family - Based in Canada but with significant land holdings in the U.S., the Irving family owns vast timberland in Maine and other parts of the northeastern United States.

5. The Emmerson Family - Owners of Sierra Pacific Industries, one of the largest lumber producers in the United States, the Emmerson family has extensive timberland holdings in California and Washington.

6. The Ford Family - Descendants of Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, the Ford family owns substantial land holdings, including timberland and agricultural land, primarily in Michigan and other parts of the Midwest.

These individuals and families have not only amassed significant wealth through their land holdings but also wield considerable influence in the sectors in which they operate, whether it's media, telecommunications, sports, or forestry. Their continued presence on lists of U.S. land billionaires underscores the enduring value and importance of land as an asset class and the strategic advantages it offers in terms of diversification and wealth preservation.
